Most performing/recording musicians would use one of the big DAWS, Sonar, Ableton, Cubase, Reaper. with a decent audio device, Firewire or USB, which has good well written drivers, both for audio and midi, therefore by-passing the need to use Windows GS Wavetable or the equally abysmal Midi Mapper. If, as you claim, you're a performing/recording musician, I'm surprised you rely on such shoddy programmes as Midi Mapper of GS Wavetable. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Note: Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. You may use your favorite search engine and look for compatible synthesizer for Windows 7.
You might need to download third party software for synthesizing. In Windows Vista / 7, MIDI mapper is abolished so we can't select default MIDI device and only use 'Microsoft GS Wavetalbe Synth (MSGS)' to playback MIDI data. MIDI device selection software 'MIDISelector' 'MIDISelector' is free, open source software for selecting MIDI device instead of MIDI mapper. In short, Windows 7 doesn't have the Midi mapper like the previous versions of Windows but it is still included.
